Artist Statement

I am a Black abstract mixed media artist from Seattle, Washington. I create vibrant works that explore joy, identity, memory, and transformation through color and expressive abstraction. Working with acrylic paint, color pencil, and mixed media on canvas, wood, or with digital tools, like Procreate,  I build layered compositions inspired by music, nature, fashion, travel, and the emotional landscapes of everyday life. Guided by intuition, rhythm, and curiosity, my paintings evolve organically, allowing movement and color to guide my improvisational creative process.

Drawing from my lived experiences—including six transformative years in Washington, D.C.—I create dreamlike visual worlds that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and imagine new possibilities. My work embraces abstraction as a language of freedom, encouraging personal interpretation while celebrating Black feminine energy, resilience, and belonging. Rich with texture, organic forms, and expressive mark-making, each painting becomes an invitation to connect with beauty, wonder, and the limitless potential of the imagination.

Perri Rhoden is a Seattle-based abstract mixed media artist and muralist whose work celebrates joy, movement, and collective belonging through vibrant color and layered abstraction. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from Howard University in 2013 and has spent more than a decade developing a multidisciplinary practice that spans painting, murals, and public art.

Influenced by music, nature, travel, and the power of Black cultural expression, Rhoden creates richly textured works that blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and public spaces throughout the Pacific Northwest, while her murals have become part of the visual landscape from Oregon to North Seattle. She is a member of the Vivid Matter Collective and contributed to the historic Black Lives Matter mural at Seattle’s CHOP protest. Whether creating intimate studio works or vibrant public murals, Rhoden’s practice invites viewers into joyful, abstract worlds that foster connection, spark curiosity, and celebrate the beauty of shared human experience.

Regina is a born and raised Seattleite with familial roots in Louisiana. Having lived most of her life in the Central District, she has witnessed the city change in many ways. She attended Garfield High School and University of Washington. Regina has spent her life helping others working in hospitals and nursing homes. She is a proud member of community, a mother, aunty, and grandmother.
